Cape Town has officially reclaimed its status as South Africa’s leading startup ecosystem, as highlighted in the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 released by StartupBlink.
With a remarkable 39% year-on-year ecosystem growth rate, the city has surged 24 places in the global rankings to secure the 114th position worldwide, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This achievement further establishes Cape Town as the third-highest ranked startup ecosystem on the African continent.
This recognition not only highlights the immense potential of the region but also reinforces the Western Cape’s emerging identity as a prime destination for entrepreneurs, investors, and technology firms seeking to scale their operations into African and global markets.
Wesgro CEO Wrenelle Stander remarked on the significance of this upward trajectory, stating, ‘Cape Town’s rise in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index is a strong endorsement of the Western Cape’s innovation ecosystem and the collaborative efforts that continue to drive its growth,’
Stander emphasised that the region offers a compelling mix of entrepreneurial talent, top-notch infrastructure, access to wider markets, and a supportive business environment, all of which empower startups to thrive and succeed.
The strong performance of Cape Town’s startup ecosystem emerges during a period marked by noteworthy growth within the region’s technology sectors.
This growth is supported by increased venture capital activity and a vibrant fintech sector, which is backed by world-class infrastructure and an abundance of talented entrepreneurs.
A string of significant investment milestones has played an essential role in propelling this momentum. Notably, Cape Town-based fintech infrastructure company Stitch has solidified the city’s position as a fintech powerhouse, raising USD 55 million in Series B funding while expanding through strategic acquisitions of ExiPay and Efficacy Payments.

Additionally, ecosystem enablers such as UVU Africa are crucial in sustaining the region’s innovation pipeline. Through initiatives that focus on biotech and educational technology acceleration, UVU Africa translates academic research and skills development into commercially viable enterprises, further bolstering the region’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Western Cape Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, reflected on this promising trajectory, asserting that the innovation economy has become central to the province’s growth strategy.
‘This achievement reflects the success of the Western Cape Government’s commitment to building a resilient, innovation-led economy that creates jobs and opportunities for our residents,’ Meyer said, adding that startups play an integral role in driving economic growth and generating solutions to significant societal challenges.
At the city level, the City of Cape Town has positioned itself as a competitive global investment destination, backed by infrastructure development and business-friendly reforms. ‘Cape Town’s rise in the rankings shows we’re becoming a stronger place for business and innovation,’ said Alderman James Vos.
He noted that the City’s Business Hub actively supports local entrepreneurs and startup founders, helping them to start, grow, and scale their businesses effectively.
Vos further highlighted the importance of infrastructure investment and regulatory frameworks in enhancing the entrepreneurial climate, assuring that the City is committed to creating an environment conducive to innovation and investment.
The StartupBlink report also underscores South Africa’s impressive global performance in Clean Energy, ranking 12th worldwide.
