Cape Town has once again emerged as the focal point of violent crime in the Western Cape, with fresh statistics showing a sharp uptick in serious offences.
Between April and June 2025, the city recorded 1 160 murders, marking a 15.3% increase compared to previous months. Authorities also noted 1 157 attempted murders, signalling a worrying trend of escalating violence, as per EWN.
Firearms remain central to the province’s crime problem, according to Western Cape Deputy Commissioner Major General Preston Voskuil. Law enforcement reports indicate that weapons are frequently used in both murders and assaults, highlighting the persistent danger residents face. The first-quarter gains in reducing murders were erased by August, as police documented an additional 77 homicide cases.
In response, authorities intensified firearm confiscations, seizing 1 291 guns across the province during the reporting period. Beyond firearms, law enforcement removed more than 12 900 dangerous weapons, including knives, blunt objects, and other implements used in violent acts.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Preston Voskuil noted a disturbing rise in crimes involving women, with some elderly women reportedly in possession of firearms, adding complexity to the ongoing public safety crisis.
Experts warn that these figures reflect a broader pattern of entrenched violence, fuelled by easy access to weapons and socio-economic pressures. While police efforts are ongoing, the numbers underscore the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to curb violent crime across Cape Town and the Western Cape at large.
