Cape Town’s summer cultural season roared into life on Saturday as the KKKA Kaapse Klopse Voorsmakie transformed Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse into a vibrant celebration of music, colour and community, offering a lively taste of what to expect at the 2026 Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Held alongside the Festive Fair and the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, the Voorsmakie featured 16 Kaapse Klopse troupes and shifted the focus of the racecourse from a traditional race day to a full-scale cultural festival.
Thousands of spectators filled the venue as choreographed performances, bold costumes and traditional sounds created an electric atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
As daylight faded, the event reached its peak when more than 8 000 performers arrived in over 90 buses and took to the track in a striking display of sequins, brass bands, harmonies and precision movement.
The mass performance highlighted the scale and energy of the Kaapse Klopse tradition, drawing loud applause from the crowd.
The Voorsmakie served as a preview of the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade, scheduled for Monday, 5 January 2026, in Somerset Road, Green Point, where troupes are expected to line the streets with colour, music and movement as spectators gather along the route.
The Kaapse Klopse tradition dates back to the mid-19th century within Cape Malay communities and has evolved from early slave celebrations into one of South Africa’s most recognisable cultural events. Known previously as ‘Tweede Nuwe Jaar’, the annual parade blends music, dance and elaborate costumes, reflecting generations of heritage and identity.
KKKA director Muneeb Gambeno said the Voorsmakie marks the official start of the season for the troupes. He described it as the first opportunity for groups to showcase their music, style and creative direction in the months ahead, adding that the excitement is shared by both performers and the public.

Gambeno stressed that the Klopse movement extends far beyond carnival day, saying community-based clubs play a vital role throughout the year by empowering young people, offering structure and education, and fostering unity. While the competition element has intensified over time, he said the heart of the tradition remains rooted in harmony and community development.
This year marks the fourth year of the partnership between the KKKA and Hollywoodbets, which Gambeno said has helped the tradition grow while remaining true to its roots. He noted how performances have evolved over the years, from smaller bands to precision marching formations, while still preserving the distinctive ghoema beat that defines the Klopse sound.
Hollywoodbets Brand and Communications Manager Devin Heffer said the combination of the Festive Fair and the Voorsmakie reflects a commitment to creating inclusive experiences that celebrate Cape Town’s culture while building momentum for the summer season.
The 16 participating troupes represented communities across the Cape Flats and beyond, ranging from long-established groups to youth development organisations. Together, they delivered a showcase of music, movement and costume that reinforced Voorsmakie’s role as a bridge between communities ahead of the main parade.
Attention now shifts to the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade, where up to 100 000 spectators are expected to line Somerset Road on 5 January 2025 before celebrations continue into the DHL Stadium for the opening day of the KKKA Kaapse Klopse Competition. Events such as Road March, Best Dressed and drum major categories are set to draw large crowds.
The minstrel season will then continue at Athlone Stadium from Saturday, 10 January, with weekly events attracting around 20 000 people each weekend, resuming from 24 January through to 7 February 2025 after a brief mid-January break.
