Police are currently investigating the brutal murder of a taxi driver, who was stabbed to death last night in Brooklyn.

“The unknown taxi driver was stabbed to death inside his vehicle during an apparent argument with two male suspects who are yet to be arrested,” South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson, Andre Traut, said.

Maitland SAPS are leading the investigation into the incident, which took place at 8.35pm on Wednesday evening, in Van Riebeeck Street, Brooklyn.

Speaking to CapeTalk, Richard Bosman, Executive Director of Safety and Security for the City of Cape Town, said that this trend seems to be picking up. “It just brings to the fore of how careful you have to be. One always thinks one has to be careful when calling a cab, but it seems drivers themselves are becoming targets of violence. It is very concerning,” he said.

Last week, a Bolt (previously Taxify) driver was stabbed to death when he responded to a trip request in Langa. The driver, whose name was Robin Dreyden, was laid to rest in Parow last week.
