On 21 May, Titus Motloung allegedly attacked a female police officer who was hitchhiking from Richmond to Bloemfontein in the Free State. ‘She (the police officer) was offered a lift by the accused, who is an engineer in the City of Cape Town. Along the way, the accused started to attack the victim,’ says Mojalefa Senokoatsane, provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority. ‘She tried to alert passing motorists and one noticed her gestures, while the accused refused to let her out of his car.’
IOL reports that soon after, members of the police started preparing a roadblock on the same road that Motloung was travelling on. ‘When the accused realised there was a roadblock, he rammed his car against the barricade and the car caught fire. The accused was arrested, and the police rescued the victim.’
Motloung’s next court appearance was postponed until 30 May for a possible bail application. He will remain in custody until then.
