It’s the season of giving, and in this spirit, the City of Cape Town’s Fire & Rescue Service gave the most precious gift of life to three mothers in need, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Just 12 days into December, the City’s Fire & Rescue Service assisted in delivering three newborns at their fire stations, with two deliveries taking place at Mfuleni Fire Station.
Most recently, on Thursday, 12 December, a soon-to-be mother arrived at the Mfuleni Fire Station just before 10am. Springing into action immediately, firefighters Eugene Meyering and Trevor Adams successfully assisted her in giving birth to a healthy baby girl and cut the umbilical cord within 45 minutes.
The mother and newborn baby were subsequently transported to Khayelitsha District Hospital via ambulance.
A few days earlier, on 4 December, firefighters based at Gugulethu Fire Station stepped in swiftly to deliver the first of a set of twins at around 5am.
The second baby was delivered at the hospital a while after. It was reported that both the mother and her twins are all in good health.
Marking the start of the season, an expectant mom arrived at Mfuleni Fire Station with severe obstetric pains on 1 December.
Guided by telephonic instructions from an ambulance emergency assistant, firefighters Joswin Lameyer and Khuselo Blaai successfully delivered a healthy baby boy, clamped and cut the umbilical cord.
Soon after, the mother and newborn were transported by ambulance to Site C Community Health Centre in Khayelitsha.
Taking to Facebook to praise the firefighters for their efforts, City’s MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith said he was incredibly happy that all the births were free of complications and that the moms and their newborns are in good health.
‘Fires often take the spotlight, but this is the Fire & Rescue Service, and these events remind us of their broader role,’ said Smith.
He also commended the staff members involved for their compassion and ‘being true ambassadors for the service.’
‘At the rate our staff are going, we might have a junior fire crew by the end of the month,’ joked Smith.
