Cape Town’s waste services have received a major boost with the addition of 61 new vehicles to the City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate. Valued at around R110 million, the investment aims to ‘ensure more reliable service delivery’ across the metro.
According to the City of Cape Town, the fleet includes refuse compactors, tipper trucks, and other key vehicles that will be rolled out to depots citywide to strengthen frontline services.
One of the standout features of the new compactors is the pump-to-roll function. Instead of drivers manually switching between load and unload modes during refuse collection, the system automatically disengages when the handbrake is pulled. Officials note that this innovation enhances both road safety and overall efficiency.

Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, highlighted the importance of the upgrade.
‘This investment not only increases our operational capacity, but also introduces new technology that makes the work safer and more efficient for our staff,‘ Twigg explained.
The announcement forms part of the City’s broader waste strategy, which places emphasis on efficiency, modernisation, and capacity-building to keep pace with Cape Town’s growing population. Alongside strengthening daily refuse collection, the strategy also supports ongoing recycling projects, waste minimisation efforts, and initiatives to maintain cleaner communities.
City officials stress that investments like this are not only about improving operations today but also about preparing for future growth and ensuring waste services remain sustainable in the long run.
