The City of Cape Town is marking a major employment milestone after 69,000 new jobs were added to the metro during the final quarter of 2025.
The figures follow the latest labour force data released on Tuesday by Statistics South Africa, which showed South Africa’s overall unemployment rate dipping by 0.5 percentage points over the same period.
According to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Cape Town’s job market is outperforming national trends, with the city recording its lowest unemployment rate on record at 19.8%.
The mayor said employment in the metro has climbed to an unprecedented 1.9 million people now earning a living in the Mother City, pushing unemployment into the teens for the first time.
While acknowledging that nearly one in five residents remains without work, Hill-Lewis described the steady decline in unemployment as a positive signal for the local economy.
He added that the real impact is being felt by those entering the workforce for the first time, saying every new job represents a household gaining stability and the ability to provide for their families.
