Cape Town’s skies will transform into a canvas of color and creativity this October as the International Kite Festival returns with its first full two-day format since pandemic restrictions eased.
The festival, organised by Cape Mental Health since 1994, will feature what organizers describe as a ‘spectacular showcase of kites from both local and international participants.’ As announced on their official Facebook page, the event will include entertainment for all ages, kite-making workshops, food vendors, and an amusement park for children.
The organizers emphasise that the event is designed to be a safe and joyful family outing, while also carrying a deeper message about the importance of mental health in building a resilient society.

The event will take place at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery on October 25-26, with tickets available through Quicket. The announcement highlights that the festival will include international kite displays, building on its reputation as a significant event in global kite-flying circles.
The inclusion of kite-making workshops and a children’s amusement park positions the event as a comprehensive family experience alongside its advocacy mission.

Mental health advocacy and awareness
The festival serves as the primary annual fundraiser for Cape Mental Health, which provides free mental health services throughout the Western Cape. With South African statistics indicating that approximately 16.5% of the population lives with a mental disorder( Southern Suburbs Tatler), the event aims to foster greater understanding and support for mental health challenges.
The kite-flying theme symbolizes what CEO Professor Dr. Ingrid Daniels previously described as the ‘courage to speak openly about mental health challenges.’
Beyond the main weekend event, Cape Mental Health runs complementary initiatives including school competitions and community fly events designed to ensure broad participation.
The organisation has also established a BackaBuddy campaign for those unable to attend in person, allowing continued support for their mental health services throughout the year.
The 31st Cape Town International Kite Festival represents a significant milestone in the event’s post-pandemic recovery, returning to its full two-day format while expanding its programme offerings.
As mental health awareness continues to grow in public importance, this festival maintains its relevance by providing a joyful platform for serious conversation and support for vital mental health services in the Western Cape.
