A professional make-up artist and hair designer from Woodstock, Cape Town, won an Emmy Award for Hairstyling and Make-up at the recent ceremony on 7 June.
Gale Shepherd (64) won the award for her work on the Netflix documentary series African Queens: Njinga, based on the story of an Angolan warrior queen.

She is not the only South African who shone bright at the ceremony, as production designer Warren Gray won an Emmy for Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design for the same show, as reported by IOL.
Gale Shepherd, with 25 years of experience in the fashion industry, has worked on over 500 international TV commercials and fashion shoots.
Her recent film credits include make-up design for Warner Brothers’ House Party 3 and South Africa’s 2017 Academy Awards entry, Noem My Skollie.
Shepherd also received the SAFTA Golden Horn Award for Best Make-up and Hair Design in a Feature Film for her work on Noem My Skollie.
Ward Councillor Ian McMahon celebrated Shepherd’s win, calling it ‘wonderful and inspiring news for the community.’ He added, ‘It’s fantastic when a ‘Woodie’ shines on the world stage. Congratulations, Gale.’
Rob Marshall, Woodstock secretary of the U Watch Forum, praised Shepherd as a role model for the youth. He remarked, ‘It is easy to get lost among the crime-fighting efforts and forget that Woodstock has a rich history of talented and creative residents making their mark in the world. A wonderful result.’
