An allegedly homeless person has been arrested for stabbing a Muslim woman near Saunders Rock in Sea Point on Saturday afternoon, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to a post that has been shared widely on social media platforms, the perpetrator, described as a ‘dark-skinned, unstable bergie looking man’, stabbed her in the arm with a pair of scissors after asking if she was Muslim.
‘The guy asked if she [was] Muslim, she was wearing a scarf, and then left, then came back and stabbed her in [her] arm with scissors,’ said the victim’s sister-in-law, Feriel Sonday, in a Facebook post.
‘She made a statement at the police and the hospital [yesterday] with so much pain in [her] arm. Please be alert, ladies… Alhamdulillah, police caught the so-called beggar…’
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the arrest:
‘Be advised that a 28-year-old male was arrested for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm by members of Law Enforcement and Metro Police,’ said Van Wyk.
‘Sea Point detectives are currently busy with an investigation on the circumstances and motive of this incident.’
While the official motive remains unclear at this stage, many social media users, including community Facebook group Fight Against Crime SA and community activist Moeshfieka Botha, speculate that it was a religiously motivated assault.
