Police have arrested six teenagers following an attack on a vehicle travelling along the N2 highway near Cape Town International Airport, after tourists visiting from Wales were targeted earlier this week.
According to police reports and SmileFM, the incident occurred while the visitors were en route to the airport.
The vehicle they were travelling in was allegedly stoned, prompting the matter to be reported to the South African Police Service at Cape Town International Airport.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the incident was captured on CCTV footage, which played a key role in identifying the suspects.
‘The incident has been captured on CCTV and police were able to identify the six boys responsible for the stoning,’ Van Wyk said.
The footage was shared with Nyanga police, who were tasked with tracing those involved. Officers subsequently carried out a search operation in the Crossroads residential area, where all six suspects were located and arrested on Thursday.
Van Wyk confirmed that the boys, all aged 14, were found wearing the same clothes they had on at the time of the incident. ‘They were wearing the same clothes that they wore when the incident happened,’ he said.
Police added that the attack took place on the N2 opposite the logistics company DSV’s premises, as the tourists were reportedly visiting a resident from Stellenbosch, who was driving them to the airport when the incident occurred.
The suspects are expected to appear in court once they have been formally charged.
Police have not released further details at this stage, and investigations into the matter are continuing.
