Neighbourhood watches across Cape Town are increasingly turning to technology to strengthen community safety efforts, with a dedicated mobile application recording a sharp rise in usage over the past year.
Developed to help registered neighbourhood watch groups report incidents, log municipal service requests and manage internal operations, the platform has grown steadily since its rollout.
Information noted by the City of Cape Town shows that nearly 1 400 neighbourhood watch members from 270 groups have already completed training and been onboarded to the system.
The figures point to growing adoption on the ground, as monthly entries on the app climbed from 1 072 in March 2025 to 4 303 in March 2026, reflecting how community volunteers are increasingly using digital tools to communicate concerns and flag issues in real time.
In many suburbs, neighbourhood watches have long served as an important link between residents, law enforcement agencies and municipal services.
The app is designed to streamline that relationship by placing reporting tools directly in volunteers’ hands while creating a centralised record of incidents and service-related concerns.
According to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith, the information generated through the platform is proving valuable beyond day-to-day reporting.
‘We are planning further mass training sessions in the coming weeks to expand the rollout and reach as many potential users as possible,’ he outlined.
‘This application empowers Neighbourhood Watch structures and provides ease of access to critical municipal services, but it also serves as a platform that the City can leverage to determine hotspots, pinpoint particular challenges and adjust deployment levels and priorities based on the data emerging from a particular area or suburb.’
Data collected through the platform shows that policing-related incidents and municipal service requests are among the most commonly reported issues. Neighbourhood watches in Edgemead and Heideveld currently rank among the most active users.
Beyond logging incidents, the application also functions as an administrative hub for neighbourhood watch organisations.
Members can manage patrol schedules, duty rosters and operational planning from within the platform, helping volunteer groups coordinate activities more efficiently.
Other features include simplified icon-based reporting categories, location-based address suggestions that display nearby addresses first, low data consumption and the ability to upload supporting photographs and video clips.
Every service notification or incident report submitted through the system automatically generates a reference number, allowing users to track matters more easily.
