The former Paralympian swimmer Achmat ’’Sharkboy’’ Hassiem is slowly making progress recovering after he was taken off the ventilator and is now breathing on his own. However, he is still in a coma.
However, Hassiem is still in a coma since last month following breathing complications after he had minor surgery on his upper back. Hassiem experienced difficulties breathing and his neck started to swell up and Doctors were required to perform an emergency operation.
Hassiem’s brother Taariq told the Weekend Argus that Achmat’s vitals are currently stable, however, it could change day by day.
” He is battling with an infection. Once the infection is gone and his vitals are more stable he will move to rehabilitation, provided he doesn’t pick up a bug or another infection after they evaluate him,” Taariq was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the family have started a crowdfunding campaign for Hassiem and said that they have been inundated with prayers and messages of hope. To assist the family by contributing towards Hassiem’s rehabilitation, email: [email protected]
