Thousands of Cape Town pensioners and social grant recipients are being encouraged to renew their municipal assistance benefits before 1 July to avoid disruptions to the support they currently receive, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The reminder comes as the City’s new General Valuation roll takes effect from the start of the new financial year. In a recent update, the City of Cape Town said beneficiaries who currently qualify for pensioner rebates and other forms of municipal relief will need to reapply so their eligibility can be reassessed under the latest valuation cycle.
For many older residents, these rebates help reduce the burden of rates and service-related costs, making them a vital part of household budgets at a time when living expenses remain under pressure.
While some residents may have renewed benefits in previous years, the City explained that pensioner rebate applications are linked to the General Valuation process.
To simplify administration, pensioners have only needed to renew their status once every three years instead of annually.
That three-year period now comes to an end on 30 June 2026, following the implementation of the 2025 General Valuation roll.
Municipal officials noted that reapplications are required because legislation obliges local authorities to verify the financial circumstances of beneficiaries and confirm that they still meet the qualifying criteria for assistance.
The City says dedicated teams have already begun contacting registered pensioners and social grant beneficiaries to assist with the renewal process.
Residents who need help can visit their nearest Customer Interaction Centre or request assistance via email. The municipality has also indicated that it is working with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the Department of Home Affairs on initiatives that could streamline future application processes and reduce paperwork for qualifying residents.
Looking ahead to the 2026/27 financial year, the City has proposed allocating more than R8.3 billion towards social assistance programmes aimed at qualifying pensioners and indigent residents.
Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys, said municipal staff are working to ensure beneficiaries receive the support they need:
‘Staff will continue to work non-stop to assist our beneficiaries and ensure there are no unnecessary hurdles that make their lives more difficult.’
With less than a month before the deadline, beneficiaries are being urged to act sooner rather than later to ensure their rebates and assistance remain in place when the new financial year begins on 1 July.
