Western Cape police made a massive breakthrough in the fight against organised crime after seizing 15 bricks of cocaine worth an estimated R18 million from a storage facility in Roeland Street, Cape Town.
According to SmileFM, officials received a tip-off about drugs and firearms being stored at the location; the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and Organised Crime detectives raided the facility on Tuesday. During the search, they arrested a 40-year-old suspect and uncovered not only the cocaine but also an arsenal of illegal weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, an Uzzi, five 9mm pistols, and ammunition.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the operation, stating that the suspect now faces charges for drug dealing and illegal possession of firearms.
‘Armed with intelligence about drugs and firearms being stored at the mentioned address, the members operationalised the information and pounced on the self-storage facility where they found the suspect (male) at one of the units,’ he added.
Meanwhile, provincial police commissioner Themisile Patekile reaffirmed the South African Police Service’s commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and removing illegal firearms from the streets, emphasising the threat they pose to community safety.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court soon. Authorities have praised the operation as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks in the region.
