According to police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, Cape Town police subsequently confiscated 13 rifles and seven handguns, while 19 security guards are currently being questioned as part of the investigation.
‘Police reports indicate that a team compromising police intelligence operatives, the National Intervention Unit, K9, the drone unit and the provincial combat team were busy monitoring movements in close proximity of the Nyanga taxi rank when shots were exchanged between the warring parties,’ said Potelwa.
‘As a result of the deployment, further shooting was averted,’ she added. ‘Meanwhile, police have saturated the area and other hotspots with deployments as scores of commuters were left stranded as a result of the shooting incident.’
Potelwa also confirmed that the investigation is currently being handled by the provincial taxi task team, and engagement with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) is ongoing in efforts to determine the legality of the firearms and the security companies they work for.

This incident of gun violence follows just a day after two men (aged 26 and 35) were shot dead and two others were left wounded in Lenteguer, Mitchell’s Plain, on Monday afternoon.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the shooting is believed to have been gang-related.
‘Preliminary investigations suggest the assailants, travelling in a white Quantum minibus, approached the victims, and three of them exited the vehicle and opened fire,’ said Pojie.
The Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) subsequently deployed reinforcements to tackle the ongoing gang violence.
These incidents, however, are just two of the countless incidents occurring multiple times a day that continue to go uncovered and/or unreported as gun violence continues to ravage parts of Cape Town.
