On Saturday evening, a 35-year-old patient from New Somerset Hospital disarmed a police officer and opened fire.
A 32-year-old police constable from Sea Point police station was caught in the crossfire. He was severely wounded during the shooting but has succumbed to his injuries and has passed away, as per News24.
Spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa indicated that the death of the officer was confirmed by the hospital that admitted him.
According to police, the suspect had been taken to the hospital for medical attention when the officer had his gun taken from him.
“Reports from the scene indicate that Sea Point police had taken a 35-year-old suspect to Somerset hospital for medical attention when a man in the ward grabbed the firearm of a police official and shot him through the head,” SAPS said in a statement.
The suspect went on to shoot and kill two patients who were in his vicinity, as per IOL.
“The man then shot two patients who were in his proximity. Both died on the scene and the 32-year-old police official was seriously injured. SAPS officials on the scene subsequently disarmed the suspect and arrested him,” the statement continued.
