As summer approaches, the City of Cape Town has taken significant steps to ensure the safety of swimmers and beachgoers by concluding its seasonal lifeguard assessment programme, Cape {town] Etc reports.
On Friday, 290 ambitious candidates showcased their skills in a series of rigorous evaluations aimed at securing a position on the coveted summer lifeguard roster.
Over the past fortnight, these aspiring lifeguards have undergone intensive training at various swimming pools across the city, including Blue Downs, Retreat, and Long Street Swimming Pools.
The assessments, designed to test not just physical fitness but also life-saving skills and commitment to public safety, form a vital part of the City’s strategy to maintain safe water environments.
Mayco for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham remarked that, ‘We salute the nearly 300 young individuals who have stepped up to serve their communities. The assessment process ensures that only the most qualified and safety-conscious individuals are appointed to help keep our pools and beaches safe. We encourage residents to swim only where lifeguards are present this summer,’
The lifeguard selection process is thorough, which includes a 400-metre swim as well as assessments of rescue techniques and first aid skills, all conducted under the watchful eyes of experienced lifeguards and officials from Recreation and Parks.
Prospective lifeguards must also pass criminal clearance checks and drug screening before being officially appointed.
Successful candidates will undergo further training and onboarding before they are deployed to designated beaches and pools, aligning with the City’s comprehensive drowning prevention campaign aimed at safeguarding the community this summer.
During an inspiring recruitment event at Muizenberg Beach, Ward 64 Councillor Izabel Sherry expressed admiration for the diverse group of participants, stating, ‘The turnout was amazing, and your time, effort, and commitment will help ensure a safer summer at our beaches and pools,’
