Cape Town is making major strides in revitalising its public sports infrastructure, with multi-million-rand upgrades now complete at Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone and significant progress underway at Wesfleur and Blue Downs Stadiums, Cape {town} Etc reports.
These renovations mark a critical phase in the City’s long-term plan to modernise its athletics facilities, ensuring safer and more accessible venues for athletes and spectators alike.
According to the City of Cape Town, the refurbishments, which include new floodlights, seating and track repairs, come as part of a citywide push to bring stadiums up to national compliance standards while fostering community sports development.

What’s new at Vygieskraal?
The Athlone-based stadium has received:
- New floodlighting for evening training and events
- R1 million in roofing repairs
- Restored shot put and long jump areas
- Upgraded plumbing and electrical systems
- New spectator seating for improved comfort
Adjacent rugby facilities have also seen parking and fencing upgrades, with additional lighting installations planned for the 2025/26 financial year.
Bigger investments ahead
Wesfleur and Blue Downs Stadiums are continuing their work, investing a combined R60 million to restore athletics tracks in time for the upcoming season. These upgrades are part of a strategic citywide programme guided by a 2021 Athletics Study that ensures facilities meet SASREA compliance standards.
Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, emphasised the long-term benefits:
‘By investing in these upgrades, we’re ensuring that athletes of all ages and abilities have safe, welcoming, and well-equipped spaces to train and compete. It will ensure our sports facilities offer safe, quality spaces for communities.’
