In a historic moment for New York City, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the youngest mayor in over a century, marking a significant milestone as the first Muslim to hold the position.
The energetic streets of New York were alive with celebration on the evening of 4 November, as Mamdani, running as a Democratic socialist, triumphed over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani, who emerged from relative obscurity to claim the Democratic nomination in June through an impressive upset, centred his campaign around issues of affordability and equity in one of America’s largest metropolitan areas. His win represents a shift towards progressive politics in a city that has seen its share of political turbulence in recent years.
Critics, including former President Donald Trump, have dismissed him as a ‘communist,’ showcasing the polarising views on Mamdani’s approach.
Originally born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York with his family at the tender age of seven.
His formative years spent in South Africa undoubtedly shaped his worldview, further enhancing his rich multicultural perspective.
A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College where he co-founded the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine and Mamdani’s academic background is complemented by a strong activist spirit.

His election is not only a personal victory but also a win for many communities within the city. By posting campaign videos in Urdu and Spanish, Mamdani has endeavoured to communicate with various demographics, reinforcing his inclusive approach to leadership.
His victory speech resonated widely as he declared, ‘New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,’ as quoted on USA Today.
The election drew significant attention, marking one of the most closely watched local elections in recent history.
A record-breaking voter turnout was recorded, with over 730,000 New Yorkers casting early ballots, making it the highest early in-person turnout for a non-presidential election in the city.
The enthusiasm in the air was palpable, especially when Mamdani boldly addressed Trump during his victory speech, saying, ‘Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!’
