Cape Town seal feeding has shocked viewers after a video from Hout Bay harbour showed a man known as Faanie feeding a Cape fur seal directly from his mouth, Cape {town} Etc.
The clip, reported by Briefly News drew immediate reactions online, including the question, ‘Has he ever heard of rabies?’
CapeNature previously said in a notice that any activity that disturbs seals is illegal under NEMBA TOPS without a permit, and the agency has confirmed rabies in local seal populations.
The City of Cape Town also urges the public not to feed or touch seals, with a coastal by-law spot fine of up to R3000 for being within five metres of a seal. CapeNature CEO Dr Ashley Naidoo said people must ‘stay informed and proactive’ when they encounter wildlife.

The clip landed in a city already dealing with repeated seal feeding warnings and public safety concerns at the harbour, where authorities continue to push for caution around wild marine animals.
NSRI noted that people should give seals their space, avoid touching seals and contact trained officials if an animal appears injured or distressed.
The clip has reignited debate about wildlife etiquette at Hout Bay, where tourist curiosity can quickly turn into risky behaviour.
