The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has launched a public participation process for the planned upgrade of the Strandfontein Pavilion, a key component of the municipality’s Strandfontein Coastal Urban Node Development Framework, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Built in the 1980s as a day resort, the Strandfontein Pavilion features a 300m windbreak promenade but has faced ageing infrastructure and deterioration, with some areas condemned.
According to the City, the public can submit feedback on its upgrade until 4 November 2024.
On Wednesday, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced via social media that the Strandfontein Pavilion is set for major upgrades.
‘We know how special the Pavilion is to so many Capetonians, and this project will make sure we can enjoy it for generations to come,’ he said in the post.
‘Make your voice heard on the proposed project.’
Project implementation is anticipated to begin in 2026, Property Wheel reports.
The City’s deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, said the development cost is uncertain due to extortion risks, IOL reports.
The Pavilion upgrade will occur in three phases.
The Strandfontein Coastal Node development will include businesses, restaurants, social and recreational facilities, and 1 200 residential units, including subsidised housing.
In November 2022, the City first called on residents to comment on its proposal to develop the neglected and underused 26-hectare Strandfontein coastal resort area into a mixed-use urban node development.
The proposed development is set to include residential, commercial and recreational facilities like picnic areas, walkways and terraces.
It is located on the False Bay coast, north of the tidal pool and east of Fisherman’s Lane.
The reconstruction of Fisherman’s Lane, also known as Broken Road, was completed in November 2023 and will connect with the Pavilion’s Node development.
