Cape Town’s enforcement agencies reported a noticeable easing in emergency calls and incident volumes over the first weekend of January, offering early signs that the festive rush has begun to taper off across the city.
Operational updates shared by municipal authorities show that the Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) dispatched assistance to 1 322 incidents between Friday and Sunday, 2–4 January, marking a 28,5% decrease compared with the previous weekend.
The earlier period had recorded 1 850 call-outs, placing added pressure on frontline responders.
This cooling trend was reflected across several key categories. Figures released by municipal safety officials indicate 57 assault cases, 26 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, and 153 noise complaints, all lower than the week before, according to the City.
Speaking on the shift in activity, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, said the change was noticeable.
‘The downturn was quite noticeable compared to both the New Year’s period and the previous weekend, an indication that in some respects, certainly, the festivities ended fairly quickly,’ Smith said.
While there was a slight dip in arrests, enforcement teams remained active across neighbourhoods, transport corridors and public spaces.
‘While arrests and other indicators are measures of success, so too are the hundreds or thousands of incidents prevented through proactive patrols and assistance, whether that be point duty or assisting stranded motorists and visible patrols in communities, at public amenities and events,’ he added.
During the reporting period, the City’s enforcement agencies made a combined 241 arrests and issued 62 929 fines.
Metro Police officers were responsible for 96 arrests, including 40 related to drug possession, while also issuing 2 245 notices for traffic and by-law violations.
On Saturday, 3 January, officers recovered two firearms in separate incidents in Hanover Park. Two suspects, aged 20 and 38, were detained and later handed over to Philippi SAPS.
Law Enforcement officers recorded 115 arrests and issued 5 594 fines during the same period.
Traffic enforcement remained a major focus. Officers recorded 55 090 offences, impounded 85 public transport vehicles, and executed 642 warrants of arrest.
A total of 30 arrests were made, with 26 linked to driving under the influence of alcohol, underscoring the continued emphasis on road safety as holiday travel winds down.
