Construction has officially begun on the Saxdowne Shopping Centre, a new 6 000m² retail development set to transform the high-traffic intersection of Stellenbosch Arterial and Saxdowne Roads in Cape Town.
Developed by Abland, the centre will be anchored by major retailers Shoprite and Clicks, offering visitors a seamless and easily navigable shopping experience. The project is designed with Cape Town’s raw, rustic charm in mind, featuring exposed brickwork and industrial-style accents to evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia, as per the Daily Investor.
Saxdowne Shopping Centre is being built on a 1.8-hectare site, providing 6 027m² of gross lettable area. Nearby suburbs such as Jagtershof, Silver Oaks and St Dumas are expected to benefit from its central location and accessibility. Abland confirmed that the project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026.
‘This continues our commitment to creating sustainable, high-quality developments that shape the future of South African communities,’ the developer said. A
bland has a strong track record in retail, residential, office, industrial, and motor developments, with previous projects including Groot Phesantekraal View, Merino Mall, Canal Plaza, The Rubik and Penta Suzuki.

Groot Phesantekraal View, opened in August 2025, spans 30 000m² and features retailers such as Woolworths, Checkers, SuperSpar, Dis-Chem, Clicks, Mr Price, Ackermans, and Pick n Pay Clothing. Its attractions also include restaurants like KFC, McDonald’s, and Wimpy, and a 200-metre underground shooting range by Dave Sheer Guns, highlighting Abland’s innovative approach to retail spaces.
The launch of Saxdowne comes amid a wave of retail growth across the Western Cape. Somerset Mall recently unveiled the first phase of its R350 million expansion, adding 26 stores and 5,000m² of retail space, while the V&A Waterfront plans a massive R20 billion expansion of its Granger Bay precinct, including a luxury retail wing featuring Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Gucci.
This surge in retail development mirrors the region’s booming property market, driven by semigration and an influx of foreign buyers. Cape Town property prices have risen 160% since 2010, with foreign purchasers accounting for around 40% of transactions over R10 million in 2024 and 15% of deals between R3 million and R5 million, according to Lightstone.
With Saxdowne Shopping Centre, Abland aims to combine strategic location, thoughtful design, and strong tenant partnerships to meet growing demand and shape the city’s evolving retail landscape.
