Cape Town Stadium will soon be called DHL Stadium after the Western Province rugby sponsor acquired the naming rates.
In conjunction with the move by the Stormers from Newlands to the Stadium in GreenPoint, the stadium’s name will change. From January 2021, the new name will come into effect and has been agreed to for four years.
“An agreement was reached at a council meeting this morning between the stadium and DHL,” Neilson told Netwerk24 on Friday, October 30.
These rights cost the courier company R11 million.
This is the second of the major World Cup stadiums to have a sponsor opt-in for naming rights, with Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg naming rights being bought by FNB in 1989 and extended continuously.
Whether the DHL naming rights will be renewed will only be seen after the first four years but this move by the sponsor is smart considering the hype around the new home of the province’s rugby team.
The big games coming to the stadium next year include British & Irish Lions tour next year in July.
