Residents and businesses in several suburbs across Cape Town are urged to prepare for low water pressure or potentially no water at all, as essential maintenance work on the city’s water infrastructure commences from Friday morning until late Saturday afternoon, 1 August, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The maintenance initiative, spearheaded by the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate, involves the temporary shut-off of water supply in order to replace an integral off-take valve on a crucial 1220mm diameter bulk water pipeline located on Smart Street, Goodwood.
During this period, the following areas are expected to be significantly affected: Century City, Tygerhof, Brooklyn, Paarden Eiland, Koeberg, Ysterplaat, Summer Greens, Milnerton, Kensington, Factreton, Maitland, Goodwood, Athlone, Langa, WP Showgrounds, Pinelands, Thornton, Parow, Ruyterwacht, and Grand West, along with their surrounding areas.
Residents are encouraged to practice caution during this maintenance window. Those who still receive water are advised to use it sparingly in order to sustain supply throughout the network while the maintenance work is ongoing.
City officials stressed the importance of conserving water and recommended keeping taps closed to mitigate the risks of water loss and potential damage when water supply resumes.
Once the repairs are successfully completed and water flow is restored, residents are instructed to open an outside tap for approximately 30 seconds. This simple action can help release any trapped air from the system, and the water collected can serve secondary uses such as flushing toilets.
The City extends its sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this maintenance work may cause and appreciates the understanding of residents and businesses as teams work diligently to complete the task efficiently and safely.
