A high ranking officer in the South African Police Service has been arrested after he allegedly escorted a drug trafficker who was actually an undercover officer.
According to reports, the acting commander of the Table Bay Harbour police station, Lt-Col Vincent Zaba was arrested at work on Friday, 22 April.
The 54-year-old Zaba allegedly sold 25 rounds of ammunition to the undercover officer for R2,000 as well as received R20,000 for the safe passage of drugs during a sting operation in October and November 2021, Soweto Live reported.
Western Cape police spokesperson Col Andrè Traut indicated that corruption amongst police officers will be eradicated as they do not harbour criminals among their ranks.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila further indicated that Zaba was released on R15,000 bail but faces three counts of corruption, three counts of defeating ends of justice, and a charge of providing ammunition to a person not allowed to possess it.
Meanwhile, Zaba’s case was postponed until July 12.
