The driver is alleged to have been transporting pupils to school, in an unlicenced vehicle and without a valid driver’s license.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning, in Athlone and the traffic officer is currently in hospital.
Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson of the traffic department, stated that the incident happened when the officer tried to stop a minibus taxi at a checkpoint in Klipfontein Service Road.
Bezuidenhout further confirmed that both the driver and vehicle lacked the necessary licenses and that the driver had indeed been transporting schoolchildren.
As it stands, the injuries sustained by the officer are not yet known.
A case of reckless and negligent driving is now being investigated by the Athlone police service.
According to News24, a 37-year-old foreign national has since been arrested and is set to appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court, once charged.
JP Smith, the City of Cape Town mayco member for safety and security, reiterated that attacks on law enforcement staff would not be tolerated.
Smith went on to elaborate on a chase which occurred on the N2 earlier this week.
Ghost Squad officers instructed a motorist to pull over, after reckless overtaking, and the motorist’s refusal resulted in a chase.
Eventually, the driver was boxed in and arrested for reckless and negligent driving.
The suspect then attempted to resist arrest and proceeded to stab an officer in the head using the keys of his vehicle.
Smith further stated that the suspect went on to grab the pepper spray of the second officer, and attacked said officer with the spray while punching and kicking them.
The suspect re-entered his motor and sped off, again being chased down by officers who had arrived to provide assistance.
The driver was eventually arrested at the Green Point Traffic Department on Tuesday evening, after the owner of the taxi brought him in.
He is set to be charged with assault as well as reckless and negligent driving.
