Update, 3pm:
According to a press statement issued by Ceres Rail Company, the remainder of the train’s journey has been cancelled due to the accident.
‘We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to resolve the situation,’ according to the statement.
‘Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,’ the statement added.
Update, 10am:
According to Ceres Rail Company, a road vehicle ignored the locomotive whistle, and various level-crossing protection measures, and tried to beat the train across the level crossing.
However, the vehicle stalled on the tracks. The driver was able to exit to vehicle before impact.
There is no damage to the locomotive and no injuries have been reported.
The driver of the vehicle is however in shock and will be assisted at a hospital.
The relevant authorities are on-site to ensure proper procedures and followed in assessing the situation.
A train departing from Foreshore en route to Elgin collided with a car, Cape {town} Etc reports.
A video has just been shared on community traffic groups, showing the aftermath of the incident.
