The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has once again commenced with the youth hiking programme, an initiative undertaken to promote physical activity and to foster connection to nature and the outdoors.
The next group hike has been scheduled for Saturday, 28 September, on the Tafelberg side of Table Mountain reports Cape {town} Etc.

Following the heavier-than-usual winter rainfall, the Table Mountai trails had been closed to the public as far as hiking was concerned and as such, the hiking training sessions were delayed.
Constantia Nek was utilized for training hiking instead, as the location is well-known within the hiking community.

On Saturday, 21 September, 58 young people took part in the hike which was led by facilitators and marshals.
The group featured individuals from Ottery, Seawinds, Khayelitsha and Woodstock. They all form part of various after-school programmers from all around the Mother City and partake in these sessions as they encourage fitness, camaraderie and a genuine love of the outdoors.
The group departed from Constantia Nek and followed the trail around the way to the Woodhead Reservoir.
When commenting on the initiative, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, stated that they are thrilled to see the amount of young people becoming active and embracing the beauty of the natural environment.

Saturday, 28 September, marks the date for the next hike which will take place on the Tafelberg side of Table Mountain.
These weekly undertakings aim to help participants build their skills and confidence in preparation for the main challenge which will take place on 26 October 2024.
Here, teams will take on the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclear’s Beacon.
The challenge, posed by the City, will be facilitated by an experienced supervisor to ensure a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
