Cape Town residents are in for a refreshing treat this summer as the City’s Recreation and Parks Department prepares to reopen 37 community swimming pools across the city, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The phased rollout, which will continue into the new year, promises to bring safe and accessible recreational spaces to communities, despite challenges posed by the city’s aging infrastructure.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, expressed her excitement for the reopening. She highlighted that this milestone is a significant achievement for local communities, saying, ‘We are thrilled to reopen these 37 pools in phases, ensuring that our residents have access to quality recreation while we continue to address infrastructure challenges.’
Currently, 10 pools are already open for use, including popular spots such as Long Street, Atlantis, Blue Downs, and Muizenberg. These pools are offering residents a chance to cool off and enjoy the summer heat, with more facilities set to join them in the coming weeks.
The phased reopening will see an additional 27 pools come back into service, beginning in early December. From 6 to 15 December 2024, several community pools are set to open their gates, including those in Athlone, Hanover Park, Bellville Central, and Mnandi, among others. Then, from 16 to 31 December 2024, another 10 pools will be ready for swimmers, including those in Manenberg, Strand, Khayelitsha, and Wynberg, as first reported by The South African.
The City has emphasised that this phased approach allows for both immediate access to recreational spaces and continued maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of the facilities. While some pools will undergo minor repairs, the reopening process is designed to balance the need for community access with ongoing improvements to the infrastructure.
As the summer season gets into full swing, Cape Town’s residents will have even more opportunities to make a splash, whether for a fun day out with family or as a cool escape from the heat. With the reopening of these pools, the City is enhancing the quality of life for many, offering safe and enjoyable spaces for all to unwind and refresh.
This phased reopening plan is part of a broader effort by the City to ensure that all communities have access to recreational facilities, and the timing couldn’t be better for the long, hot summer ahead. With more pools to open in December, it’s shaping up to be a season of fun in the water for Cape Town.
