A transformation is underway in Cape Town, where the City’s innovative solar initiatives have not only bolstered the renewable energy sector but also contributed significantly to local economic growth, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Between 2014 and 2024, the City’s small-scale embedded solar Photovoltaic (PV) programme has facilitated investments ranging from R1.7 billion to R2.6 billion and has created between 713 and 1 140 full-time equivalent jobs.
As of mid-2025, the power generated from these initiatives is now enough to supply electricity to approximately 150 000 homes.
It has been a decade of progressive action for the City, positioning itself as a leader in promoting diversified energy supply and driving green economy investments.
The ambitious solar programme has not only empowered residents and businesses but has also established a robust infrastructure capable of withstanding the challenges posed by South Africa’s energy crisis.
The data presented by GreenCape highlights the astonishing growth of the City’s solar operations. By June 2025, a total of 13,398 authorised grid-tied systems had been installed, boasting an impressive total capacity of 251.6 megavolt amperes (MVA).
This substantial leap is up from 6 400 systems and an installed capacity of 140.6 MVA during the earlier reporting period from 2014 to 2024.

Alderman Xanthea Limberg, the Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, expressed recognition for the collective efforts driving this change.
‘The City’s progressive small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) solar PV promotion programme focuses on creating an enabling environment for the growth within the sector. We’ve worked hard to proactively plan for our energy needs in a highly regulated environment, providing critical support to enhance energy security,’ Limberg stated.
Among the key achievements of the solar programme has been the introduction of a 25 c/kWh incentive top-up to the SSEG feed-in tariff, aimed at stimulating investment in renewable energy.
The successful streamlining and automation of application and authorisation processes through online systems have also simplified the journey for aspiring solar developers.
Additionally, the City introduced cash-for-power initiatives, allowing residents to monetise their energy contributions.
Looking forward, the momentum is not expected to wane. The City remains committed to encouraging further investments in renewable energy and enhancing the community’s energy resilience, even as national regulations evolve.
‘Thanks to our businesses and households, we are transforming the energy landscape in Cape Town,’ Limberg added.
