Significantly, this collaboration comes at a time when Cape Winelands Airport is planning an extensive expansion, projected to cost approximately R8 billion.
This expansion aims to elevate the airport into a major economic hub in the coming years, and with it, the chance to engage in practical learning, applied research, and innovation across various disciplines is set to flourish.

The collaborative efforts are expected to yield a range of applied research opportunities linked to the airport’s operational environment, particularly catering to master’s students in SU’s Engineering Management programme.
Central to this partnership is the ambition to establish facilities that facilitate testing, innovation, prototyping, and other activities related to aviation, logistics, and smart technologies.
Cloete highlighted the importance of nurturing future aviation talent within South Africa, stating that they are keen to explore opportunities linked to aviation skills development, pilot training pathways, and engineering disciplines. ‘The intention is to create a long-term skills ecosystem that supports both economic growth and human capital development in the Western Cape,’ he added.
Prof Sibusiso Moyo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Internationalisation at Stellenbosch University, remarked, ‘From a research and innovation perspective, this collaboration creates valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement across fields ranging from engineering to agriculture.’

Current projections estimate that the development could sustain approximately 35 000 jobs during the construction phase and create over 100 000 jobs during its first 20 years of operation.
