According to the Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell, the COCT’s emergency services will be on standby, but residents can assist by clearing out drainage systems and digging trenches to reroute water away from their homes, IOL reports.
Disaster Risk Management’s plea:
- Clear out drainage systems
- Raise the floor level of a structure so that it is higher than the natural ground level
- Make sandbags to keep water out
- Dig trenches around the house to divert water away
- Report blocked drains, intakes and illegal dumping – illegal dumping in the stormwater canals and sewers makes flooding worse
Meanwhile, SAWS spokesperson Hannelee Doubell confirmed that 20mm to 30mm rainfall is expected, with 40mm to 50mm in parts of the south-western Cape, as News24 reports.
