A 37-year-old suspect who was allegedly involved in a cash-in-transit incident handed himself over to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Cape Town on Monday, January 3.
According to reports, the suspect was involved in the incident that took place in December 2021 at a grocery store in Zwelethemba, Worcester, where a G4S crew member was accosted by two armed men after he collected money from the store.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase indicated that the suspects disarmed the G4S crew member and grabbed the cross-pavement-carrier (CPC) box that had been activated and fled the scene with a getaway vehicle.
“The driver of the armoured vehicle pursued a silver Suzuki getaway vehicle which was later found abandoned on Ntlakohlokaza Street, in Zwelethemba. The CPC box with stained money was also recovered from the vehicle,” Nkwalase said.

Nkwalase further mentioned that the suspect was allegedly linked to the crime through further investigation and a search operation was executed at his premises on December 3o with the assistance of Flying Squad, however, the suspect was not found at the time.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the Worcester Magistrates Court on Wednesday, January 5.
