Most people have a designated spot in their car for extra notes and coins, solely for the purpose of tipping petrol attendants. And social media is often buzzing with feel-good stories about receiving excellent service at their local petrol station.
I don’t know about you, but I have a few of my favourite petrol attendants who are always eager to wash my windows or pump up my tyres writes Cape {town} Etc’s Micayla Vellai. Even though some may argue that “it’s part of the job”, I see it as an act of kindness, especially when it’s accompanied by a cheerful story.
So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that there’s an alternative way for South Africans to tip petrol attendants as part of the shift away from cash and towards contactless forms of payment. Customers can now use the Engen 1app, which scans a unique QR code to tip away!
The Engen 1app was launched in mid-2020 and allows customers to pay for their fuel and earn loyalty points without needing cash or a card, Business Insider reports. The convenient mobile app is linked to the customer’s debit or credit card and scans a QR code, quite similar to SnapScan or Zapper, in order to process payments.
The nifty “Tip an Attendant” function, which is made possible through a partnership with Telkom Pay, can be used to tip petrol attendants and Quickshop cashiers at Engen garages.
The petrol pump attendants and cashiers will be required to register for a Telkom Pay Wallet, and once they are registered, they will receive a unique QR code and number which will be attached to a lanyard worn by the employees. The money is then deposited into the employees’ Telkom Pay Wallet.
There’s a new digital tipping sheriff in town thanks to the partnership between Engen and Telkom!
