A prominent South African journalist, Debora Patta, known for her extensive foreign reporting, is reportedly contemplating legal action against CBS News following her recent dismissal, which has been linked to a heated controversy surrounding her August interview with former US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.
The fallout from that interview has led to a significant shake-up at CBS News, reflecting wider tensions within the media landscape regarding coverage of sensitive geopolitical issues.
Patta, who was based in South Africa, found herself at the centre of a media storm when Huckabee accused her of heavy editing that misrepresented his stance on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The former Arkansas governor took to social media, asserting that CBS News manipulated his comments concerning reports of starvation in the region. ‘Ever wonder how the media edits an interview to give you a different story than the one they had?’ Huckabee posed provocatively on X, further igniting the controversy surrounding Patta’s reporting.

Her dismissal from CBS News came as part of sweeping job cuts around 100 positions were eliminated under new leadership from CBS News president Tom Cibrowski.
Sources indicate that Bari Weiss, the recently appointed editor-in-chief known for her pro-Israel stance, may have influenced the decision to terminate Patta’s employment. Adding insult to injury, despite having entered into a new three-year contract just months prior, insiders disclosed that Patta is not receiving a full severance payout, as per report by New York Post.
In the wake of her firing, Patta has begun consultations with legal advisors as she seeks options for a potential lawsuit against CBS News, with speculation that the roots of her contention may tie into her critical coverage of Middle Eastern affairs.
‘She is probably looking to sue over her Middle East coverage,’ a source articulated according to New York Post.
Neither Patta nor CBS News would comment publicly on the reported firing.
