Andy Makoma’s loved ones were left disappointed after the Magistrate’s Court in Paarl released Elroy Erasmus on bail on Friday. Erasmus, who hails from Franschhoek, was allegedly accused of attacking Makoma with a chainsaw on his birthday.
According to News24, the 37-year-old Makoma was assaulted after a disagreement with Erasmus’ partner, who, along with a group of women, were blocking his driveway when he tried to park his car.
Makoma claimed that Erasmus pushed his wife as the two men got into a brawl without weapons, before Erasmus left and returned with a chainsaw. Erasmus was arrested after the attack on Makoma, who lost his arm while suffering severe injuries.
Erasmus has since been released on R1 000 bail, much to the dismay of Makoma’s family and friends.
As per IOL, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Erasmus was instructed to reside at an alternate address in Kraaifontein and not make contact with the witnesses, directly or indirectly.
The case is back in court on 5 October 2021.
