The City’s Disaster Operations Centre has urged residents to remain cautious following reports of localised flooding in various areas due to persistent downpours experienced, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Roadways have borne the brunt of the heavy rainfall, overwhelming the stormwater systems and creating hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians alike.
‘We remind the public to please remain vigilant particularly on the roads and to report any weather-related emergencies to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700,’ stated the Disaster Operations Centre.
As City teams are swiftly attending to service requests, the situation is being closely monitored to mitigate any further impacts.
While the early morning rains have led to lane closures in several key areas, officials report no full road closures at this time.
The affected routes include:
- Owen Road eastbound after 35th Avenue, Elsies River
- Strandfontein Road northbound at Klip Road – left lane affected
- Malibongwe Drive eastbound before Sandown Road
- Jakes Gerwel Drive southbound between Weltevreden Bridge and Oliver Tambo Drive
- Blaauwberg Road in both directions at the MyCiTi bus station
Motorists are advised to reduce speed, increase their following distance, and proceed with utmost caution through these areas to ensure their safety.
Meanwhile, the current forecast predicts that the rain will continue throughout most of the day, with a tapering off expected later this evening.
As the rain continues to fall, the Disaster Operations Centre reaffirms its commitment to keeping the public informed and safe.
