The City of Cape Town has opened a public comment period on a proposal to introduce a compulsory heavy vehicle stop on Kloof Nek Road, following a run of accidents involving trucks travelling citybound.
The City says the stop would sit about 150 metres downhill from the pedestrian signal at Tafelberg Road and would require drivers to engage low gear before continuing the descent. (CoCT)

Under the truck stop proposal:
- Right-hand lane would accommodate general traffic
- Left-hand lane would become a heavy vehicle lane for roughly 250 metres
- Clear signage and road markings directing drivers to the demarcated section
- Compulsory stop
The City expects the measure to give drivers a final check on brakes and gearing before the steep section.
Residents and stakeholders can attend an information session.

- Date: 17 September 2025 from 15:00 to 18:00 to ask questions and speak to project team members
The City opens the formal comment period on 15 September and will accept submissions until 16 October 2025. Full details and guidance on how to comment appear on the City’s Have Your Say page.
Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, said the City wants to work with communities to select measures that improve safety for everyone who uses the route.
He encouraged residents to attend the session and to submit written or digital comments so the project team can assess local concerns.
