To maintain cleanliness during the tourist season, the City has launched its Festive Season Cleansing Programme for 2024/25.
This initiative targets key areas such as beaches, transport routes, tourist hotspots, and central districts, with extra services including litter bin management, street sweeping, and illegal dumping removal.
Workers have been hired randomly from the City’s Jobseeker database.
Teams will be working round the clock in staggered shifts, seven days a week, including public holidays for the duration of the programme.
‘Due to the influx of tourists and holiday makers visiting the city’s business and recreational areas, and the festive carefree atmosphere that descends at this time of year, litter levels can increase noticeably,’ says Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg.
‘Recognising the importance of the City’s tourism sector, maintaining our recreational areas to a high standard is a key deliverable for the Urban Waste Management Directorate.
‘This year, we will continue to strive towards the highest standards of cleanliness that the City of Cape Town has become synonymous with.
‘While the City’s teams are hard at work, the public are reminded that they also have an important role to play in keeping the City clean. Please dispose of litter in the public litter bins provided,’ said Twigg.
