‘The City of Cape Town reminds political parties that all election posters and banners must be removed by midnight on Saturday, 8 June 2024. The strings or plastic used to attach the posters to streetlight poles must also be removed,’ the City stated.
According to the City, election posters must be taken down within 10 days after the election to avoid penalties.
South Africans cast their votes on 29 May. The City warned that political parties will be billed if they fail to remove their posters.
‘Posters not removed by this deadline will be taken down by the City starting Monday, 10 June 2024, at a cost of R134.10 per poster. The responsible political party will be billed,’ the City said.
A reminder was also sent to all political parties on Friday, 31 May.
‘The City kindly reminds political parties of the election poster removal rules that were shared with all in the run-up to the election. These are detailed in the election rules document. Another reminder was sent on Friday, 31 May 2024,’ the City added.
If political parties wish to recover any posters removed by city staff, they will need to coordinate with City officials.
‘To recover any unauthorised posters removed by the municipality, parties must liaise with the City’s Environmental Management Department officials during office hours to collect the posters,’ the City explained.
