The City’s energy teams have made significant strides in maintaining public safety and infrastructure resilience this winter, successfully completing over 130,600 electricity-related service requests between May and August, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This decisive action included managing more than 41,000 streetlight requests across the city, a response driven by the increased risk of outages during the cold, inclement weather.
In August alone, the teams resolved nearly 8,602 streetlight requests, showcasing their commitment to restoring light in the community.
Alderman Xanthea Limberg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, highlighted the importance of their ongoing efforts: ‘We’re finishing up our winter wrap of electricity-related service requests, and we see that the responsiveness of our teams is vital in ensuring safer streets for our residents,’

As summer approaches, the demand for service requests typically declines, barring periods of extreme weather such as high winds. However, the City remains vigilant as issues stemming from vandalism, theft, and illegal connections remain ever-present, posing significant challenges to ongoing infrastructure maintenance and community safety.
‘Damage from these acts continues to be our biggest threat to creating safer and brighter communities, extensive damage can lead to longer repair times, sometimes requiring the complete replacement of grids and power infrastructure,’ Limberg added.
The City’s energy teams work closely with law enforcement to combat these crimes, with a growing presence in known hotspot areas. As part of the Protect Your Power campaign, the City encourages residents to report any suspicious activities promptly.
‘If we all stand together to report suspicious activity, we can effectively bring justice to those behind these infrastructure crimes,’ Limberg urged.
With more than 245,000 streetlights maintained across the metro, the City’s commitment to ensuring a well-lit, safe environment remains steadfast.
