The City of Cape Town’s Energy Directorate has won two major awards for the Paardevlei 132kV Switching Station project. The project won a Silver at the IPMA Global Project Excellence Awards 2025. It was also named runner up for Project of the Year at the PM Summit and Prestige Awards 2025. innovation
According to CoCT the switching station was built to strengthen the city electricity grid. It uses modern gas insulated switchgear technology. The project cost R152.2 million and had a 1.4% cost variation on budget. The station will save the city about R8 million each year. It also helps connect renewable projects and independent power producers.

‘These awards demonstrate excellence in infrastructure delivery and highlight the capabilities of our teams,’ said Alderman Xanthea Limberg. She said the project was completed during the Covid-19 pandemic and showed strong project discipline.

The Energy Directorate also celebrated staff recognition. Wesley Barthus won Emerging Project Manager of the Year at the PM Summit awards. The Imizamo Yethu electrification project won Project of the Year at the City’s EPCM awards.
