The City’s Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments have achieved a significant impact in community safety efforts, with nearly 300 arrests made and over 42,800 fines issued during enhanced patrols over the weekend, reports Cape {town} Etc.
On Saturday, 12 July 2025, Metro Police officers made strides in the Steenberg area, apprehending three suspects aged 36, 41, and 49 on drug-related charges.
During a routine patrol, officers uncovered 13 packets of Tik, one Tik lollie, and several Mandrax tablets. The suspects were promptly detained at the Steenberg South African Police Service (SAPS) station.
Additionally, the same day saw officers following up on a tip-off in Hanover Park regarding drugs stored at a local residence on Aloe Street. After securing consent from the homeowner, officers discovered 49 Mandrax tablets and seven units of Tik, leading to the arrest of a 32-year-old man for illegal possession of drugs. This incident spotlights the vital role of community engagement in law enforcement.
On the preceding Friday, 11 July, officers in Bellville apprehended a 27-year-old man following a routine patrol when he fled upon seeing the police vehicle. A search revealed a shocking 117 units of heroin, and the suspect was subsequently detained at Bellville SAPS.
Traffic Services reported staggering numbers during their operations, identifying 35,306 transgressions. They impounded 241 public transport vehicles and executed 994 warrants of arrest.
Among the suspects arrested, 17 were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, a clear indication of the ongoing challenges related to road safety.
The Law Enforcement’s Metal Theft Unit also made significant progress in crime prevention, arresting four suspects on Wednesday, 9 July 2025. These individuals were found in possession of essential infrastructure equipment, including overhead copper cables, an issue that has plagued the community and resulted in the loss of vital resources.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) reported a high volume of calls during the weekend, including 79 incidents of physical assault, 147 noise nuisance complaints, and assistance with 43 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
Mayco for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith noted that, ‘The presence of our officers in communities during enforcement patrols is effective in arresting suspects. Officers often received information from members of the community regarding illegal activities, and the swift reaction and follow-up result in successful arrests. We encourage communities to inform officers of any criminal activities they know of,’
