A 40-year-old resident of Clanwilliam, near Citrusdal, Shaun Titus has received a 10-year prison sentence for dealing in methamphetamine, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The sentence was handed down in the Clanwilliam Magistrates Court, where Titus was found guilty under the provisions of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140/1992.
The case stemmed from an incident that occurred on December 20, 2021, at approximately 2:50pm. Members of the West Coast District Rural Flying Squad were conducting routine surveillance when they observed Titus leap from the back of a suspicious vehicle parked at a garage in Citrusdal, adjacent to the N7 National Road.
The officers, suspicious of his behaviour, promptly intervened and conducted a search of both Titus and his backpack.
Inside the backpack, officers discovered a staggering 1.013 kg of methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘tik,’ with an estimated street value of R354,550. In a desperate attempt to deflect authorities, Titus claimed the substance was merely salt. However, the substance was sent to a laboratory for analysis, confirming its true identity.
The gravity of the offence led to the case being transferred to detectives from the Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Investigations (Narcotics) unit based in Vredendal.
Demonstrating impressive diligence, the investigation team meticulously examined the evidence and built a case strong enough to stand in court.
Following a protracted trial, Titus was ultimately convicted of drug trafficking, highlighting the unwavering determination of law enforcement in combating the illegal drug trade.
The magistrate suspended two of the ten years imposed, but the sentence serves as a stark warning to others involved in the illicit drug sphere.
