The Mdzananda Animal Clinic has announced an expansion of its sterilisation initiatives in Khayelitsha, aiming to tackle the pressing issues of pet overpopulation and the associated health risks for both animals and humans, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This enhanced drive comes in addition to the clinic’s substantial annual contributions, with around 3,000 sterilisation procedures performed each year within the community.
Samantha Mann, General Manager at the clinic, expressed enthusiasm for the new campaign, stating, ‘We are excited to launch this campaign and significantly impact the lives of many dogs and cats and, in so doing, create a better environment for pets and their pet owners in Khayelitsha,’
The clinic has been actively signing up pets for sterilisation over the past few months, while also educating the community about its critical importance.
Sterilisation is widely recognised as one of the most effective measures to control pet overpopulation. According to the clinic, it plays a crucial role in reducing the spread of diseases and alleviating the suffering of animals who may be born into circumstances where they cannot be adequately cared for.
Also, sterilising pets contributes to better overall health, preventing certain cancers and infections that can arise in unsterilised animals.
Thanks to a generous donation from a local granting foundation, Mdzananda is approaching its fundraising goal; however, the clinic still needs R60,000 to fully cover the project’s costs. To achieve this, they are appealing to the public for support, encouraging 100 individuals to contribute R600 each to sponsor a sterilisation procedure.
Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive at Mdzananda, stated, ‘Even if the full R600 isn’t possible, any donation towards a sterilisation will be appreciated. Together we can make an enormous difference in the current and future pet population in Khayelitsha,’
Since its inception in 1996, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has been a pivotal resource for the Khayelitsha community, treating up to 1,500 animals each month.
Their services encompass a hospital, surgical theatre, a shelter for homeless animals, mobile clinics, and an animal ambulance. Beyond medical services, the clinic prioritises education, launching various outreach programmes to promote responsible pet ownership within the community.
