The City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Directorate marked a significant milestone on 26 September 2024, by handing over keys to 32 newly built homes as part of its R800 million Macassar mega housing project, providing much-needed relief to qualifying beneficiaries, Cape {town} Etc reports.

According to the City, the project, set to deliver 2469 homes, faced challenges like violence and protests, but these have been resolved.

The City is urging community support to ensure its successful completion.
‘The Macassar housing project is progressing well with some 381 units currently under construction and the first clusters of units already complete,’ says the Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
‘Phase 1 will consist of 605 units and this phase is expected to be completed by June 2025, if all goes according to plan.’
‘The City will communicate on the progress and timelines for Phase 2 and 3 in due course. The City has spent more than R200 million on the project to date.’
Pophaim adds that the project has faced complexities, including extortion attempts, violence, and protests, but the City remains committed to providing housing for the most vulnerable.
Macassar exemplifies the City’s determination to overcome these challenges and deliver homes to beneficiaries quickly.

‘We especially thank those in the community who protected the project and ensured these keys could be handed over today. This is the dawn of a new path of possibility for this project.’
According to the City, beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected per the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available fairly and transparently preventing queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
