Over the next four days, residents and visitors will notice surveyors stationed along the 4.8km stretch, collecting public input that will inform the socio-economic evaluation of potential upgrades to the century-old Sea Point seawall.
The survey aims to capture the intrinsic and practical value the promenade brings to its diverse users. This initiative is part of a broader effort to assess options for refurbishing or upgrading the seawall, a critical structure that shields nearby neighbourhoods and infrastructure from the harsh forces of the Atlantic Ocean.
‘We encourage the public to please take a few minutes while visiting the promenade this week to complete the survey and share your thoughts,’ said Eddie Andrews, deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment. ‘Your input will help us understand the value the promenade adds to your life and what you enjoy most about it. To keep protecting the promenade, nearby infrastructure, and neighbourhoods, the seawall needs a level of refurbishment to safeguard Cape Town’s coastline. Your feedback will therefore be highly appreciated.’
The Sea Point Promenade is more than just a coastal walkway; it’s a cultural and economic lifeline. As a space for recreation, tourism, community events and small business development, it embodies the spirit of Cape Town’s vibrant seaside culture. However, parts of the seawall have withstood over a century of wear and tear, making its refurbishment a pressing concern for City officials.
This collaborative effort underscores the City’s commitment to inclusive planning and sustainable development. By engaging directly with promenade users, officials hope to ensure that any future upgrades reflect the needs and aspirations of the community while maintaining the area’s iconic charm.
Residents and visitors are urged to participate in the survey during their promenade visits this week, contributing to a project that will shape the legacy of this beloved coastal destination for generations to come.
